ESSE rules

Dear ESSE user,

These rules fill the purposes of describing a) common sense guidance on how to behave on ESSE, and b) how ESSE is governed. The rules are made to ensure a functional and healthy environment, if you see a violation of the rules please report it to the owners. Any other server administration issues can also be brought up to the owners.

Global rules:

  1. Do not use ESSE for malicious or illegal purposes
  2. Use system resources responsibly
  3. No pornography, gore, or any other vile content
  4. Respect the privacy of other users
  5. Don't be a dick
  6. Access to ESSE is granted by the owners
  7. The owners reserve the right to take action against any misbehaving user

Housekeeping:

  1. Compress large amounts of shared files to conserve storage space
  2. Users are encouraged to be active in the community, and to contribute by e.g. helping other users in need
  3. Sharing is encouraged, use the `/srv/shared` (symlinked to `~/shared`) frequently ... but keep it tidy
  4. Internal communications are mainly to be done via local e-mail (for now)
  5. Users are responsible for safeguarding their own data against leaks or loss; treat anything on ESSE as being public and at risk of deletion at any moment
  6. Individuals can request and pay for optional upgrades to ESSE, this does not make such individuals owners
  7. Users can requset for packages to be installed

Sudoer rules:

  1. Do not abuse sudo powers
  2. Only become the root user if needed
  3. Manage the system responsibly, and make all owners aware of core changes
  4. Do not switch to another user's account without their permission, unless it is required for agreed maintenance
  5. Think before you type; respect the danger inherent in sudo powers

Ownership rules:

  1. The owners are the users paying the base VPS cost (as defined by the present owners) for ESSE, and shall split this cost equally amongst themselves
  2. Being an owner requires continuous approval from all owners that has joined ESSE before this particular owner
  3. Any reimageing, migrating, or upgrades of the VPS, including upgrades requested and paid for by individuals, must be approved by all owners
  4. Owners make decisions in full agreement: a decision shall not be made until all owners agree
  5. All owners are to be made sudoers, and all sudoers shall be owners
